What is a random name picker?
A random name picker draws one or more winners from a list you already have — raffle entries, team rosters, giveaway participants, or any line-separated names. Unlike shuffling the whole list into a new order, a name selector answers “who wins?” directly: paste, click, read the winner. HitRandom’s tool runs entirely in your browser with cryptographically secure randomness, so teachers, streamers, and event hosts can trust the draw without pulling names from a hat.
Natural input: Paste from Notes, Excel, or email — one name per line is the format people already use. A live item counter shows how many eligible names are in the pool. Turn on ignore empty lines to skip blank rows from messy pastes (default on). Turn on remove duplicates when the source has repeated entries you do not want counted twice.
Raffle workflows: For a classic raffle picker, leave allow duplicates in draw off so the same person cannot win twice in one batch. Enable remove winner after picking when you draw winners one at a time and need each subsequent pick to exclude previous winners — the pool actually shrinks, so re-picks cannot repeat until you reset. Set how many to pick above 1 when you need several winners in a single fair draw.
Single vs multiple winners: One winner appears as a large, dramatic reveal with optional name-cycling animation (the winner is chosen by crypto first; animation only builds suspense). Multiple winners show as a clean card grid or copy-friendly text list — same export formats as our other list tools: comma-separated, one per line, JSON, and spreadsheet-friendly rows.
How picking works: We parse your text into an array, apply your input options, build the eligible pool (minus any session-removed winners), then draw using unbiased Fisher-Yates selection via crypto.getRandomValues(). With duplicates allowed, each slot is an independent uniform draw from the pool. We never use Math.random() or server-side seeds — your list stays on your device.
Random winner picker vs wheel vs name generator: This page targets random name picker and pick a random name intent — paste your list, pick winners, run raffles. The Wheel Spinner adds spinning visual suspense for any custom labels. The Random Name Generator invents fictional names (baby names, characters, etc.) — it does not pick from a list you paste.
Who uses this: Teachers picking students fairly, HR running office raffles, streamers choosing giveaway winners, friends deciding who goes first, and anyone who searched random name picker, raffle picker online, or pick a random name from a list and wants a free, private tool with no account. Pair with HitRandom’s List Randomizer for full-order shuffles and our coin flip and dice roller for quick games — all local, instant, and crypto-secure.
