How to use the Dice Roller

Four steps from die choice to sum-ready results.

  1. 1

    Pick die type

Choose D4, D6, D8, D10, D12, D20, or D100. D6 defaults to classic dot faces; other dice always show their numeric result.

  2. 2

    Set how many dice

Enter 1 for a single d20 check, or roll a pool like 4d6. Use quick presets for common batch sizes.

  3. 3

    Roll

Click Roll or press Space on desktop. Animation plays for up to ten dice when enabled; larger pools resolve instantly.

  4. 4

    Read sum & copy

The stats row leads with sum, then count, min, max, and average. Switch to Text view for copy-ready lists in comma, JSON, or spreadsheet formats.

What is an online dice roller?

A dice roller simulates throwing physical polyhedral dice when you do not have a set handy — or when you want verifiably fair randomness without digging through a dice bag. Tabletop players reach for dice constantly: a d20 for attack rolls and saving throws, 4d6 for character stats, percentile d100 charts, damage dice pools, and quick d6 checks for board games. Whether you call it a dice roller, roll dice online, or virtual dice, the workflow is the same: pick sides, pick count, roll, read the total. HitRandom’s dice roller runs entirely in your browser with cryptographically secure randomness, so every face is equally likely and nothing is sent to a server.

Supported dice: Standard polyhedral set — D4, D6, D8, D10, D12, D20, and D100. Each die uses cryptoRandomInRange(1, sides) from our shared random core (one independent draw per die). Roll one d20 for a skill check or forty dice for a damage simulation; the stats row leads with sum, then count, min, max, and average so batch totals are immediate.

Display that matches real dice: D6 faces show classic pips (dots) by default, with an optional toggle to show numbers instead. Every other die type shows its numeric result on the face — because that is how D4/D8/D10/D12/D20/D100 work in play. Few dice render as individual visuals; larger batches switch to a text list using the same threshold pattern as our other tools, with identical copy formats (comma, space, newline, tab, column, JSON).

For D&D and TTRPGs: Use 1d20 for the iconic twenty-sided check. Roll 4d6 and read the sum for ability-score generation. Reach for d100 when a table calls for percentile results. Animation stays on for up to ten dice when enabled; bigger pools resolve instantly so combat does not stall. Optional sound plays once per roll action, not once per die.

One page for every phrasing: People search for a dice roller, d20 roller, dnd dice, or roll dice — all describe this single tool. Rather than thin duplicate URLs, HitRandom keeps one fast page with history, stats, Dice/Text views, and no login wall.

Privacy: Everything executes locally. We do not store your rolls on HitRandom servers. Refreshing clears recent history. For regulated gambling or audited tournaments, use procedures with independent oversight — online dice rollers excel at everyday tabletop fairness.

Who needs this: Dungeon Masters, players, board-game groups, teachers running probability demos, streamers, and anyone who wants honest polyhedral rolls without a physical set. Pair this with HitRandom’s coin flip and number generator as the Games/Dice category grows.

Frequently asked questions

Is this dice roller good for D&D and tabletop games?
Yes. Roll standard polyhedral dice — D4, D6, D8, D10, D12, D20, and D100 — in the notation you already use (like 4d6 for ability scores or 1d20 for an attack roll). Results show individual die values plus sum, min, max, and average so you can read totals at a glance.
Why does D6 show dots but other dice show numbers?
A six-sided die is the only common die where people expect pips (dots) on the face. D4, D8, D10, D12, D20, and D100 are read by their printed number — that is how physical polyhedral dice work. D6 has an optional toggle to switch to numbers if you prefer.
Is this dice roller truly random?
Each die uses crypto.getRandomValues() through HitRandom’s shared random core — the same engine as our number generator and coin flip. Every face from 1 to N has an equal chance. We do not use Math.random() or predictable seeds.
Can I roll many dice at once (like 4d6)?
Absolutely. Pick your die type, set how many dice (up to 100 per roll), and click Roll. Up to twenty dice show as individual visuals; larger batches switch to a compact text list. Stats always include the batch sum — ideal for 4d6 drop-low workflows where you only need the total.
Does my data leave my device?
No. Rolls run entirely in your browser. Counts, results, and history never upload to HitRandom servers. Recent rolls are stored only in your current tab session — refresh the page and history clears.
