Random letter generator — pick A–Z, vowels, consonants

Need a random letter from the alphabet — for a classroom game, a spelling warm-up, a tabletop RPG initative tie-break, or a “pick a letter” challenge? HitRandom’s random letter generator draws fairly from A–Z using cryptographic randomness in your browser. One click gives you a single tile you can copy instantly; raise the quantity to build bulk lists for worksheets, test data, or party games.

Pick a random letter your way: Choose Uppercase (A–Z), Lowercase (a–z), or Both for mixed case on each draw. That covers the usual searches — random letter generator, random alphabet, and “give me any letter” — without extra clutter. Sort results A–Z or Z–A when you want ordered output, or leave sort on None for pure random order.

Random vowel and random consonant: The letter filter mirrors our number tool’s odd/even rules. Select Vowels only when you need a fair pick from A, E, I, O, U — ideal for phonics drills or “name something that starts with a vowel” prompts. Choose Consonants only for the other 21 letters. Teachers, streamers, and SEO visitors searching random vowel or random consonant get exactly that subset, not the full alphabet with manual counting.

Crypto-secure randomness: Each letter index is sampled through crypto.getRandomValues() and rejection sampling — the same engine behind our dice, coin flip, and UUID tools. No pseudo-random Math.random(), no server round-trip, no login.

Bulk random letters: Generate up to 1000 letters per click. Twenty-five or fewer show as orange letter tiles with individual copy buttons; larger batches open a text panel with comma-separated, space-separated, one-per-line, tab, column, and JSON formats. Copy all, download .txt or .csv, and revisit recent batches from session history. Toggle Allow duplicates off when you need unique letters without replacement — the tool caps you at the pool size (26, 5, or 21) and explains why if you go over.

Who uses this: Elementary teachers running alphabet games, app developers generating test strings, writers breaking writer’s block with a random letter prompt, podcast hosts doing “random letter” segments, and anyone who typed pick a random letter and wanted the answer in under a second. Pair with HitRandom’s Random Number Generator and Password Generator in Generators & Security — or use List Randomizer when you already have a custom letter set to shuffle.

Frequently asked questions

How do I pick a random letter?
Click Generate (or press Space on desktop when not typing in a field). HitRandom draws from A–Z using crypto.getRandomValues() and shows the letter on a tile — copy it with one tap or generate again.
Can I generate a random vowel or consonant?
Yes. Open the Letter filter dropdown and choose Vowels only (A, E, I, O, U) or Consonants only (the other 21 letters). Perfect when you searched for a random vowel or random consonant and want a fair pick from that subset.
Can I generate multiple random letters at once?
Set How many letters from 1 to 1000 and click Generate. Up to 25 letters appear as copyable tiles; larger batches switch to a text view with comma, space, newline, JSON, and spreadsheet-friendly copy formats. Download .txt or .csv anytime.
What does Allow duplicates do?
When checked, the same letter can appear more than once in a batch — like rolling a letter die repeatedly. Uncheck it for unique draws without replacement (max 26 all letters, 5 vowels, or 21 consonants depending on your filter). The tool shows a clear error if you ask for more unique letters than exist in the pool.
Are random letters generated in the browser?
Yes. Every letter uses cryptographically secure randomness from crypto.getRandomValues() via our shared random core — never Math.random(). Nothing uploads to a server. Recent results in the session history stay in memory until you refresh.
